What is Myasthenia Gravis?

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) means grave or severe muscle weakness.  It is an autoimmune, neuromuscular disease characterized by fluctuating weakness of the voluntary muscle groups.  MG occurs in all races, both genders, and at any age.  It is a potentially fatal     disease without a cure, however, with early diagnosis and proper medical treatment the disease can be controlled.  The prevalence of MG in the United States is estimated to be about 1 out of 5,000.  Yet, MG is probably under diagnosed and the prevalence may be higher.  The symptoms include:double vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty chewing and swallowing, difficulty breathing and weakness in arms and/or legs.
